ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE
The Delhi High Court has issued a notice to OpenAI in response to a copyright infringement case filed by the Indian Music Industry group, which includes major music labels like Saregama India and T-Series.
Here’s what’s happening:
The lawsuit alleges that OpenAI’s artificial intelligence models, including ChatGPT, have been trained using copyrighted sound recordings without authorization.
This legal action follows a similar case filed last year by ANI Media, which accused OpenAI of using its copyrighted news content to train ChatGPT without permission.
ANI also claimed that ChatGPT was generating false information while citing ANI as the source, raising concerns about reputational damage.
The music industry’s complaint highlights a broader issue of AI models extracting lyrics, compositions, and recordings from the internet, potentially violating intellectual property rights.
The case will be heard on February 21, March 11, and March 18, as the court evaluates the claims of unauthorized data usage.
In addition to the music industry and ANI, other organizations have expressed concerns about OpenAI’s data practices. The Federation of Indian Publishers (FIPs) and the Digital News Publishers Association (DNPA) have also sought to be involved in the case, arguing that ChatGPT produces book summaries and extracts from unlicensed sources, impacting the business of publishers and digital news platforms.
Overall: The legal scrutiny on OpenAI reflects growing concerns about how AI models are trained and the ethical implications of using copyrighted material without permission. As AI continues to evolve, the outcome of this case could set a significant precedent for intellectual property rights in the digital age.
With AI technology advancing rapidly, companies like OpenAI may need to rethink their data training practices to ensure compliance with copyright laws. The case underscores the ongoing debate between innovation in AI and the protection of creators’ rights, a conversation that will likely shape the future of AI development and regulation.

TRAFFICKING
India and Tanzania have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enhance cooperation in combating drug trafficking. Approved by India's Ministry of Home Affairs, the agreement aims to curb the illicit trade of narcotics, psychotropic substances, and precursor chemicals through intelligence sharing and coordinated enforcement actions.
Tanzania, strategically positioned in East Africa, serves as a major transit hub for heroin from Afghanistan and cocaine from South America.
In 2024, the country reported record drug seizures amounting to 2,300 tonnes.
Similarly, India has seen a sharp rise in drug-related cases, with seizures increasing by 160% from 2014 to 2023 compared to the previous period.
This agreement follows India's similar collaboration with Nigeria after the No Money for Terror Conference in 2022. It will enable the exchange of intelligence on trafficking syndicates, smuggling routes, and individuals involved in the trade.
India has also intensified its efforts to secure sea routes used for drug smuggling. Agencies such as the Indian Navy, Coast Guard, and Central Board of Indirect Taxes & Customs have joined the Narco Coordination Centre (NCORD) to curb maritime drug trafficking. From 2020-2022, the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) investigated 59 such cases.
Overall: The growing threat of drug trafficking in Africa has been highlighted by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), emphasizing the rise of dangerous drug cocktails and increasing narcotics consumption. With this MoU, India and Tanzania aim to dismantle transnational drug networks and enhance regional security.
